Purification and comparison of two developmentally regulated lectins from Dictyostelium discoideum. Discoidin I and II.

When cells of the cellular slime mold Dictyostelium discoideum differentiate from a nonsocial amoeboid form to a cohesive, aggregating form, they synthesize a lectin-like protein called discoidin, which is present on the cell surface. It is now reported that discoidin consists of two distinct lectins, designated discoidin I and discoidin II, which, although similar in some respects, differ in their electrophoretic mobilities, isoelectric points, subunit molecular weights, amino acid compositions, tryptic peptide maps, the erythrocyte species which they agglutinate, and the sensitivity of their agglutination activity to inhibition by monosaccharides. Furthermore, discoidins I and II differ in their developmental regulation as evidenced by the distinct time courses of their appearance during differentiation.     

ATP synthesis by an artificial proton gradient in right-side-out membrane vesicles of Escherichia coli.

Membrane vesicles formed from spheroplasts of E. coli lysed in the presence of ADP and P_i produced ATP when an artificial proton gradient (acid outside) was formed across the membrane. ATP synthesis required Mg²⁺ and ADP, was inhibited by dicyclohyxylcarbodiimide and carbonyl cyanide p-trifluoromethoxyphenylhydrazone, and stimulated by valinomycin in the presence of KCl. Synthesis was absent in a mutant lacking the Mg²⁺-ATPase. The optimum external pH was 2.5 when the internal pH was 8.2. Oxidative phosphorylation driven by D-lactate or succinate was also observed.     

Field Trial of Methoxyflurane,Nitrous Oxide,and Trichloroethylene as Obstetric Analgesics

In a field trial of 1,257 patients receiving methoxyflurane, trichloroethylene, and nitrous-oxide/oxygen for the relief of pain in labour methoxyflurane has been shown to have certain advantages which support its use in midwifery practice. The trial confirms our objective method for screening an inhalational agent as an obstetric analgesic.     

The effect of follicular fluid hormones on oocyte recovery after ovarian stimulation: FSH level predicts oocyte recovery

Background  

Ovarian stimulation for assisted reproductive technology (ART) overcomes the physiologic process to develop a single dominant follicle. However, following stimulation, egg recovery rates are not 100%. The objective of this study is to determine if the follicular fluid hormonal environment is associated with oocyte recovery.     

Immunohistochemical evaluation of ras oncogene expression in pulmonary and pleural neoplasms

We undertook an immunohistochemical analysis of human bronchopulmonary epithelial neoplasms and pleural mesotheliomas using a monoclonal antibody which recognizes ras oncogene products (p21ras). The monoclonal antibody, RAP-5, recognizes both unaltered and certain mutated p21ras. Formalin fixed and paraffin embedded tissue samples of 187 lung epithelial tumors and 27 pleural mesotheliomas were investigated; normal and bronchiectatic lungs were similarly studied. Normal lung and pleural tissue did not immunostain except for occasional type II pneumocytes. Reactive type II pneumocytes adjacent to carcinomas and bronchiectasis immunostained consistently. Twenty four/34 (71%) squamous carcinomas immunostained. Only 8/50 (16%) adenocarcinomas immunostained focally and weakly whereas 19/24 (79%) bronchioloalveolar carcinomas immunostained. Eleven/18 (61%) large cell carcinomas immunostained with variable intensity. Eleven/13 (85%) carcinoids, 6/7 (85%) well differentiated neuroendocrine carcinomas, and 18/21 (86%) intermediate cell neuroendocrine carcinomas immunostained while none of 20 small cell neuroendocrine carcinomas immunostained. Only a few mesotheliomas were immunostained focally. Two/14 (14%) epithelial type and 1/9 (11%) biphasic type mesotheliomas immunostained weakly; none of 4 spindle cell mesotheliomas immunostained. We conclude that while at least occasional cases of most types of pulmonary epithelial neoplasms express p21ras, the frequency and intensity of the expression are distinctly greater in certain tumor types such as squamous, bronchioloalveolar, and neuroendocrine neoplasm except for the small cell type. Contrary to these lung epithelial neoplasms, most mesotheliomas did not immunostain for p21ras. Whether the enhanced p21ras expression may point to a different mechanism of transformation or may merely reflect differentiation features remains undetermined.
